Luck Does Play a Role in Poker
Bad luck actually is a factor in poker; there is the element of chance with what cards are handed out at the table. Sometimes people are losing because they are not having good luck, they are getting dealt poor cards, or at least poor when compared to what other players are getting. But, the more a person plays poker and learns and builds on her skills, the less likely bad luck will play as big a role in her game.
Keep in mind that although bad luck streaks can happen, if a person is continuously losing month after month of playing then luck is not all to blame. One way to find out if it is luck or skill that is playing a bigger role is to track results at the tables by the hour. If a player finds that after 500 or more hours she is still in the hole on the whole, then luck is not the trouble.
Know the Fundamentals of the Game
Many people aren’t doing as well as they could in poker because they don’t have the basics of the game down. The good news is this is easy to remedy. There are plenty of good books on how to play poker out there, pick a few up and take a read. Once a person has a strong foundation in the basics, then that’s the time to get creative and put a spin on how one plays.
Don’t Be Predictable
Poker is not a game where predictability works for a player – unless it has to do with someone else at the table. A person who is at first winning and later starts losing to the same players is often a victim of being too straightforward in her game. The idea is to keep everyone else at the table guessing. To do this, throw in some deceptive moves. Some people bluff too much, while others never bluff. For those who only play good hands and always throw away poor hands, it could be time to mix things up with a bluff craftily played.
Pick Games to Play in Carefully
If winning is the goal of playing poker, it’s better to be the big fish in a small pond versus the small fish in the big pond. Playing with more experienced players might seem like fun, but if money is on the table then it will be going into their pockets. Although it might seem less cool, it’s financially more beneficial to play with opponents who are less skilled.
How Does a Player Deal with the Stress of Losing Hands?
Bad hands do happen, and how a player handles them is key to their success. Players who get too stressed out or obviously upset usually end up making poor choices. Losing is part of the game, but losing one’s patience is also a recipe for losing one’s money. If a player has gotten herself into a financial hole and trying to bale herself out, this is not a good place to play from. Sometimes it is best to cut one’s losses and come back to play another day. If a person knows that she can’t handle losing well, then it’s best to cut out early when the losses start coming.
Being a better player involves realizing that both luck and skill are involved, not being predictable, choosing who to play against carefully and learning how to do deal with the stress of losing.
