The Rules of Seven Card Stud

© Todd Hendrickson

Seven card stud has always been one of the games of choice for professional poker players, and it's easy to learn.

Deal or no Deal

Every is dealt 3 cards, 2 face down and one face up for all of the other players to see. The person with the lowest facing card is the first person to bet, and then betting continues to the left of that player. Another card is dealt and the person with the best facing cards bets first, making it very interesting because the best hand is always betting first. In total 7 cards are dealt, and the best 5 card poker hand wins.

Strategy or Luck

One of the best things about 7 card stud is that you can see 5 of the players 7 cards, giving you a good idea of your odds and chance for profit.

Just like Hold 'Em, there are starting hands that have a better chance of payout then others, but in Stud you will see a lot more flushes and 3 of a kind.

The real trick to 7 card stud is playing your opponents. Watch for their tells and their attitude on the tables. See if they have a betting pattern. All of these together will help you at the tables and keep your chip stack the biggest at the table.
